Ingemar Johansson (1959)

Nicknamed “Ingo’’ and “The Hammer of Thor,’’ the native of Gothenburg, Sweden, scored one of the biggest upsets in boxing history when he defeated Floyd Patterson by a technical knockout in the third round of their June 26, 1959, bout to claim the world heavyweight championship. More than twenty thousand cheering fans greeted him upon his return to his hometown. Patterson avenged that loss by knocking him out in their heavyweight rematch a year later. A flamboyant figure, Johansson appeared in the movie All the Young Men with Alan Ladd and Sidney Poitier. He died in 2009 at age seventy-six.
