Joe Namath (1968)

Signed for the then-record salary of $427,000 by the New York Jets in 1965, Namath helped the upstart American Football League gain parity with the established NFL and hasten the merger between the leagues. His bravado, along with his grit and laser-like arm, established him as a fan and media darling, earning him the moniker “Broadway Joe.” The signature moment of Namath’s career came when he brashly delivered on his “guarantee’’ of victory in Super Bowl III against the Baltimore Colts, who were favored by eighteen points. Debilitated by several serious knee injuries, Namath was selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985. He went on to have a career in acting, broadcasting and as a product endorser. The native of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, was born on May 31, 1943.
