Carmen Basilio (1957)

The son of an Italian immigrant onion farmer in Upstate New York, Basilio refined his boxing skills in the U.S. Marines and became a world champion in the welterweight and middleweight divisions. His everyman roots and relentless style made him a fan favorite. He reached the apex of his career when he upset world middleweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson in a fifteen-round decision on September 23, 1957, at Yankee Stadium, a victory that earned him his Hickok. After retiring from boxing with a 56-16-7 record, Basilio worked as physical education instructor at LeMoyne College and as a spokesman for Genesee Brewing Company. He was born on April 2, 1927, in Canastota, New York.
